Haulin' freight to POW

The weather seems to have moderated. We are finally having more good days than bad ones. That is in Ketchikan terms. Let me try to explain. A good day is when we have VFR conditions, that is a 500 foot ceiling, or more, and a visibility of 3 miles, or more. Both of those are kind of tricky terms because, in Ketchikan, 500 feet can be, and often is, a fuzzy 500 feet. That means I can get to 500 feet and still see something. Usually shades of grey. No, not 50 Shades of Grey, at least not that 50 Shades of Grey. The same is true of the visibility. A fuzzy grey three miles is still three miles. But, as I said, the weather has moderated and we have had several days in a row of what anyone could recognize as good VFR.

Check out the following web site: http://akweathercams.faa.gov/sitelist.php

This is a real time TV camera system showing many places in Alaska. We use it every trip to check current weather in the Misty Fjords, Craig, Hydaburg, Meyers Chuck, Ketchikan and more.

I took a recent freight run to Whale Pass and Coffman Cove, both on Prince of Wales Island (POW for short). It was a great, true, VFR day. I will let the pictures do the talking.

Just departed Whale Pass after dropping off 2 passengers and some freight. Now I'm heading to Coffman Cove.

Rough coastline. High tide line at trees is normal; no beach at high tide.
