Day 3: Into Canada

Hi!
I'm going to insert some pictures we took yesterday that I was unable to insert last night (really bad internet connection last night) before I write about more of the trip.

even though the speed limit is 75, that means you can go 80, right???

Okay, so today we left Laurel Montana at 820 am and 43 degrees. The Big Horn Mountains to the South were snow capped and just beautiful.

These are just the first of many that we will see as we get closer to the Rockies (tomorrow). Just past Laurel we had to leave the interstate and the wonderful 75 mph to take US Hwy 191 north to Great Falls. This way we will shave off miles and time rather than following the interstate south then north again. The down-side is that it is a two lane road. The good thing is that the speed limit is still a nice 70mph and the scenery is really pretty. We got to Great Falls around noon, but decided to keep going to Shelby, about and hour and 20 minutes further. There's a great Pizza Hut there that we have stopped at two other times before when we flew to Alaska in 2006 and when we drove to Ketchikan in 2007. We fueled up there at $3.82 per gallon. Still better than when we left home. The topography in northern Montana is very rolling with hardly any trees. The sun was out and the temp was a nice 73 degrees. We may even have to turn on the a/c!!

We crossed into Canada about 35 miles north of Shelby. Welcome to Alberta!

Alberta Canada is high plains and farm country. It really could have looked like down state Illinois. This is probably the only part of the trip that was a little bit boring....long, straight, flat. And Dan was sleeping.

The last time we drove this route and passed through Calgary it was snowing and very very cold. Today it was sunny and 75 degrees. But, as before, we got there right at rush hour. How did we plan that so well??

We decided to stop for the night in Red Deer, Alberta. That is only about and hour or hour and a half north of Calgary. We've stayed there before, and thought it would be a good stopping point. Gas is now by the liter and the price was $1.21, or about $4.89 a US gallon. Fortunately my Rogue is getting over 25 mpg.

More later...........
Nancy
